Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will offer free fares on February 10 to mark Transit Equity Day, a national event celebrating public transit investment for all citizens. This day honors Rosa Parks, the civil rights icon whose birthday is February 4. HRT will provide complimentary bus, light rail, ferry, OnDemand ridesharing, and paratransit services on the Monday following her birthday.
“HRT is committed to treating all customers with dignity with the best possible transit experience every day, to every customer,” stated William E. Harrell, President and CEO of HRT. “By continuing to offer free fares on this special day for the fourth straight year, we honor the lasting legacy of Rosa Parks and how her courageous act continues to impact transit agencies around the nation.”
To further commemorate Parks' contribution, bus headlights will remain illuminated throughout the day as a symbol of her influence. Additionally, each HRT bus will have a reserved front seat with a sign honoring Parks’ courage in making transit more equitable.
This year’s activities include a partnership with WNSB-FM (Hot 91) during their “Random Acts of Kindness” week. Giveaways will be distributed at HRT’s Downtown Norfolk Transit Center in the morning and at the Hampton Transit Center in the afternoon. Furthermore, HRT staff will read "I am Rosa Parks" to elementary schools across February.
Parks’ advocacy was about more than just seating; it represented freedom from bias while traveling for work or leisure. HRT supports these ideals as it strives to provide public transit access for everyone.
