Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will maintain the suspension of all services on Friday, February 21, due to persistent adverse weather conditions. The situation includes icy roads, high snowbanks, inaccessible bus stops, and unplowed secondary roads.
The service suspension impacts all systemwide bus routes, paratransit services, the Tide Light Rail, Elizabeth River Ferry, OnDemand ridesharing, and the Base Express at Naval Station Norfolk. HRT plans to provide details regarding Saturday's service on Friday.
"Safety is our top concern," stated William E. Harrell, President and CEO. "We realize this decision will inconvenience our customers, particularly those who rely on us to get to work. We are doing what’s in the best interest to protect our customers, operators, staff and assets while allowing the six cities we serve time to plow and treat roads. It is simply unsafe to provide service on Friday, particularly given the anticipated refreezing of snow and ice."
On Thursday, HRT continued efforts to clear transit centers, transfer stations, light rail platforms and ferry docks. However, most bus stops remain blocked by snow.
Additionally on Friday, information booths at transit centers will be closed along with public access to administrative facilities and the Customer Service Call Center.
