Newport News city officials have announced that all city offices will be closed on Thursday, February 20, due to a storm. Essential and mission-critical employees are required to report as scheduled.

The Four Oaks Day Service Center at 7401 Warwick Blvd. will remain open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering warming shelter and support services for those experiencing homelessness. The current PORT site is located at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church at 1024 Harpersville Rd., with normal hours resuming at Denbigh United Presbyterian Church at 302 Denbigh Blvd. on Saturday, February 22. These PORT sites operate from 5:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

In the event of widespread power outages, the city will provide shelters for residents in need.

City libraries and Parks and Recreation facilities will also be closed on Thursday, February 20. The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) and the Recovery Operations Center (ROC) will not operate on this day either.

Collections by the ROC will resume when it is deemed safe to do so in residential neighborhoods, prioritizing the safety of both residents and employees. An assessment of streets is ongoing to determine when heavy automated cart collection vehicles can safely operate within neighborhoods again. Residents are advised they can leave bins out without facing penalties.
