Snowfall in Hampton Roads concluded early Thursday morning, but the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues its efforts to clear the roads. The region received between 3 to 12 inches of snow since Wednesday. As of midday Thursday, interstates in Hampton Roads are mostly clear with some minor conditions where snow and slush remain visible. Motorists are advised to exercise caution as snow removal operations continue on the shoulders.
Freezing temperatures are expected through Friday, which could lead to slick or icy conditions on roadways, especially on bridges, ramps, overpasses, and shaded areas that freeze first. VDOT advises motorists to avoid non-essential travel on state-maintained primary and secondary roadways until conditions improve. Crews will continue monitoring and addressing roadways by spreading salt and abrasives on icy patches or slick spots.
Multi-day operations will extend into Friday due to high snowfall accumulation and freezing temperatures. VDOT prioritizes making interstates and state-maintained primary roads passable first, followed by major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities or high traffic volumes. Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated once higher-priority routes are completed.
The Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes are closed for snow removal but are expected to reopen this afternoon with eastbound traffic flow.
VDOT is responsible for maintaining all interstates, major state primary routes, and county roads in Hampton Roads, covering more than 900 lane miles of interstates, over 1,800 lane miles of primary roads, and more than 7,270 miles of secondary roads. Individual municipalities maintain their own roadways.
