Elizabeth River Crossings has awarded eight local high school graduates with its annual Good Citizen Scholarship which commends students who consistently reflect excellence in character, demonstrate leadership, and make positive contributions to both their school and community.

Each year, one graduating senior from each public high school in Portsmouth and Norfolk is selected to receive a $6,000 scholarship, disbursed in $1,500 increments across four years, for any college, trade school or post-secondary institution, so long as the student provides proof of enrollment each year. Since 2016, ERC has awarded more than $200,000 to local high school seniors pursuing advanced education.

This year’s recipients were actively involved in extracurricular activities such as Varsity Sports, Chorus, Environmental Clubs, Mock Judiciary Club, Model UN, Scholastic Bowl, Theater, and various honor societies and leadership programs. These students are also dedicated volunteers at local churches, schools, and more.

“It is our pleasure to continue to recognize and reward local students for their academic success and commitments to both community and service, especially in the face of ongoing challenges. This year’s scholarship recipients aspire to further their education, and we’re honored to support their efforts,” said Anna Bonet, chief executive officer.

The 2022 ERC Good Citizen Scholarship recipients are:

• Dionna Butts, I.C. Norcom High School

• Darria Hunter, Manor High School

• Brian Cohn, Granby High School

• Joi Hicks, Lake Taylor High School

• Nicholas Samson, Norview High School

In the fall, these recipients will be attending the College of William & Mary, Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, University of Lynchburg, and Virginia Tech.
