Re-elected and newly elected members of the Newport News City Council were officially sworn into office today during a ceremony held in the City Council Chambers. The event marked the beginning of four-year terms for Tina L. Vick, Marcellus L. Harris III, and Robert S. Coleman, who will serve from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028.
The ceremony was led by Mayor Phillip Jones and included remarks from each council member expressing gratitude for their roles and outlining their visions for Newport News' future. The Newport News City Council consists of seven members: the mayor, elected at-large, and two representatives from each of the three districts—South, Central, and North.
Tina L. Vick represents the South District and is currently the longest-serving council member after first being elected in May 2008. She has focused on economic development and community engagement throughout her tenure.
Marcellus L. Harris III serves the North District with a background in both public and private sectors leadership. First elected in 2016, he emphasizes social justice, community health, and youth mentorship.
Robert S. Coleman represents the Central District and was re-elected in November 2024 after previously serving from 2012 to 2016. He focuses on infrastructure challenges and public safety.
Curtis Bethany III continues as Vice Mayor representing the North District after being re-elected to this position; he also serves on the Virginia Municipal League Board of Directors.
Mayor Phillip Jones congratulated all council members while highlighting their dedication to serving Newport News' diverse community: “This council is a team of dedicated individuals who represent the diverse and vibrant community of Newport News. Together we will work toward progress and prosperity for all our citizens.”
