The City Council convened for its regular legislative session on Wednesday night, where it amended the Fiscal Year 2025 budget to incorporate various grants. This meeting marked the first session for newly elected Mayor Jimmy Gray, alongside incumbents Steve Brown, who was selected as vice mayor earlier in the day, and Martha Mugler. Re-elected council member Hope Harper joined newcomers Randy Bowman, Carolyn Campbell, and Michelle Ferebee.
Mayor Gray expressed optimism about working with the new council members, stating that “the goal is not to think alike, but to think together.”
The grants included in the city budget comprise federal funding aimed at supporting the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program and enhancing the resiliency of Aberdeen Gardens, among other initiatives.
In addition to budget amendments, the council unanimously approved Virginia Electric and Power Company's request to relocate a communication tower at 902 G Street off Pembroke. They also granted permission for Raising Canes restaurant on Mercury Boulevard to extend its operating hours. However, a use permit application for Karma Restaurant and Lounge on Lincoln Street was deferred until the council's meeting on February 26.
