The Newport News Fire Department (NNFD) has officially received reaccreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). This recognition emphasizes the department's dedication to public safety, efficiency, and consistent improvement.

City Manager Alan K. Archer expressed his pride in the department's achievement, stating, "As City Manager, I am incredibly proud of the Newport News Fire Department's achievement in reaccreditation by the CFAI. This accomplishment not only reflects the department’s unwavering dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety and service, but it also highlights the strong partnership between our city leadership and the NNFD. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community, and this reaccreditation demonstrates the department’s ability to adapt and evolve to meet the needs of our city."

The CFAI accreditation process begins with a self-assessment. Departments examine their operations, including staffing, training, equipment, and community risks. Following data collection and compliance with standards, the department submits an application for review. Peer assessors perform on-site evaluations to confirm adherence to standards. The CFAI Commission then decides on accreditation. Regular reaccreditation every five years shows a department's commitment to ongoing enhancement and data-informed decisions, ultimately boosting public safety and operational excellence.

The CFAI Commission is a diverse group comprising Fire Chiefs from varying department sizes, international fire service leaders, City Managers, insurance representatives, the Department of Defense (DOD), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). This blend ensures the accreditation process is thorough, unbiased, and aligns with industry best practices.

Through this rigorous evaluation, the NNFD has shown it meets high standards of performance, efficiency, and service delivery. Reaccreditation also provides critical data-driven insights, allowing for well-informed recommendations regarding personnel, equipment, and resources. This supports the department's capacity to address the needs of a growing community while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
