Hampton has unveiled a new Sensory Activation Vehicle available for rent for school functions, sporting events, and community gatherings. The vehicle offers a calming environment for individuals with sensory needs or conditions.
The city is organizing a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall to officially introduce the vehicle. This specially designed vehicle is wheelchair-accessible, climate-controlled, and includes interactive stations to provide a soothing area for people with "invisible disabilities" such as autism, Parkinson's, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
The vehicle was initially acquired by the Coliseum Central Business Improvement District and has been donated to the city. It functions similarly to Hampton's stage rental program, making accessibility more widely available at public and private events.
Bookings for the vehicle are now open, allowing event organizers to ensure accessibility at their gatherings. Inside the Sensory Activation Vehicle, a "water play" station is one of the interactive elements offered to engage its users.
