The SafeHaven Empowerment Center, envisioned by Super Bowl Champion and former NFL player Antoine Bethea, is set to open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 5. The event marks the end of extensive planning and collaboration between the Bethea Family Foundation and the City of Newport News.

The center aims to provide essential resources and opportunities for at-risk youth and families in Newport News. It will offer a range of activities, including sports, e-gaming, educational support, mentorship programs, career development workshops, and wellness services. This initiative is part of Bethea's effort to give back to his community and empower future leaders.

Remarks at the ceremony will be made by Antoine Bethea, Mayor Phillip Jones, Councilman Marcellus Harris III, along with other local leaders and youth advocates. "I am proud to see the SafeHaven Empowerment Center become a reality," said Bethea. "This center represents more than just a building—it's a place where our youth can access the tools and guidance they need to achieve their full potential."

Bethea's commitment to Newport News began in 2020 with the donation of an outdoor lighted basketball court in Denbigh Community. His partnership with the city has continued through various charitable projects over the years.

In December 2023, City Council unanimously approved a partnership with the Bethea Family Foundation for this project. The collaboration underscores both parties' dedication to making meaningful community contributions.

The facility aligns with Newport News' Youth T.H.R.I.V.E. initiative aimed at improving youth well-being through education, economic opportunity, and mental health promotion. It will serve as a hub for at-risk youth offering mentoring, skill development, career preparation, and personal empowerment resources.

Mayor Jones highlighted the significance of this endeavor: "With the launch of the Empowerment Center, we have partnered with Antoine and the Bethea Foundation to take bold actions to address the needs of youth and families in our community."
