All Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) vehicles, including buses, trolleys, light rail cars, and ferries, are now equipped with Wi-Fi. This development follows a series of investments and upgrades aimed at improving the experience for riders.
“Most of our transit has offered wireless internet connection for over a year, but we’re now pleased to offer this free service on every bus, trolley, light rail car and ferry,” stated Michael A. Price Sr., HRT’s Chief Information and Technology Officer. He added that with Wi-Fi access, customers can work while traveling, browse the internet, check schedules or stay connected regardless of their mode of transit.
This achievement is part of broader technology enhancements that include 5G routers designed to support upgraded video surveillance across all vehicles and prepare for future mobile transit passes.
Passengers can connect to HRT Wi-Fi by searching for it in their device settings once on board. Earphones remain necessary for listening to music during travel.
The process of installing Wi-Fi began in September 2023 and concluded over the summer. New buses arrive at HRT already equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities.
