The city will observe Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2. Here is an overview of how city offices, facilities, and services will be impacted.
City offices and libraries will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2.
Recreation centers Brittingham-Midtown and Denbigh Community Centers will operate with reduced hours on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All three centers will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2.
Normal operating hours for the Huntington Park Tennis Center/Pickleball Courts (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and the Beach (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) remain unchanged.
City-provided bulk collection and automated trash cart collections scheduled for Monday, Sept. 2, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 3. All regularly scheduled collections for the week of Sept. 2 will be delayed by one day: Monday's collections will occur on Tuesday; Tuesday's collections on Wednesday; Wednesday's collections on Thursday; and Thursday’s collections on Friday.
Curbside recycling collection serviced by contractors will also be delayed by one day for the week of Sept. 2: Monday's collections will occur on Tuesday; Tuesday's collections on Wednesday; Wednesday's collections on Thursday; and Thursday’s collections on Friday.
There will be no holiday collection delay for those using the 18-gallon black bin recyclers.
The Recovery Operations Center (convenience/drop-off center) will be closed on Saturday, Aug. 31 but will reopen at its usual time of 8 a.m., starting Tuesday, Aug. 3.
Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter, which serves residents of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County, will operate according to its normal schedule with the Adoption Center open from noon to 5 p.m., and the Reunite Lobby open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
