City announces closures and schedules for Independence Day

In observance of Independence Day, the city has announced holiday hours for various offices, facilities, and services.

City Offices and Libraries will be closed on Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5. Recreation Centers will also be closed on Thursday, July 4.

The schedule for Friday, July 5 is as follows:

- Achievable Dream Tennis Center will be open for Friday Night Nets from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

- Brittingham-Midtown Community Center will operate with reduced hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

- Denbigh Community Center will operate with reduced hours from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

- Huntington Park Tennis & Pickleball Courts will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

- Huntington Park Beach will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- Courthouse Way Community Center, Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, Riverview Gymnastics Center, all Senior Centers and Youth Programs will remain closed.

Regarding Trash/Bulk Collection: City-provided bulk collection and automated trash cart collections normally scheduled for Thursday will take place on Monday, July 8. All regularly scheduled collections for the week of July 8 will be delayed by one day.

Curbside Recycling Collection: Contractor-provided curbside recycling collection scheduled for Thursday will occur on Friday, July 5. There will be no delay in curbside recycling collection during the week of July 8 and no holiday collection delay for those using the Black Bin recyclers.

The Recovery Operations Center (convenience/drop-off center) will be closed from Thursday, July 4 through Saturday, July 6. The facility is set to reopen on Monday, July 8 at 8 a.m.

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter serving Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County has specific hours as well:

- On Thursday, July 4th the Reunite Lobby will be open from 8 a.m. until noon.

- On Friday, July 5th the Adoption Center will be open from noon until 5 p.m., while the Reunite Lobby operates from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
