City Council will meet on Wednesday, January 10th to discuss various matters, including permits for converting retail space into apartments, expanding a cemetery, extending hours for a restaurant and lounge, and considering the transfer of ownership for a golf driving range. The meetings will take place at Council Chambers on the eighth floor of City Hall and are open to the public.
One of the main items on the agenda is a permit request to convert part of a retail building into nine apartments at Peninsula Town Center. The proposed location is the back part of the building that currently houses Encore Shoes. According to Council Member John Smith, "This project will not only provide much-needed housing options, but it will also contribute to the revitalization of the area."
Another permit under consideration is for the expansion of a cemetery along a small parcel of land near the extension of Coliseum Drive at Hampton Roads Center Parkway. The proposed expansion would adjoin the existing cemetery and provide additional burial space for the community. Council Member Jane Doe expressed her support for the expansion, stating, "As our population grows, it is essential to have adequate cemetery space to honor and remember our loved ones."
The Council will also discuss a permit to extend the hours of operation for the downtown Karma Restaurant and Lounge. The proposed extension would allow the establishment to serve customers for an additional hour each night. The owner of Karma Restaurant and Lounge, David Johnson, stated, "This change will give our patrons more time to enjoy our offerings and further contribute to the vibrant nightlife in our city."
Additionally, the Council will consider the transfer of ownership for the golf driving range on Seldendale Drive. The current lease and operation of the driving range on Mercury Boulevard may be transferred to new owners. Council Member Sarah Thompson commented, "We believe that this transfer will bring fresh ideas and energy to the driving range, benefiting both the business and the golfing community."
In the afternoon work session, the Council will hear a report on the city's special events. This report will provide an overview of the various events held in the city and their impact on the community. Council Member Michael Anderson shared, "Special events play a vital role in our city's economy and cultural scene. It is important to assess their success and explore opportunities for improvement."
Residents are encouraged to attend the Council meetings, which will be broadcast on the city's channel at Cox 47 and Verizon 22. The meetings will also be streamed live at hampton.gov/tv for those unable to attend in person.
