Seven schools within the Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) district have been recognized with the 2024-2025 Purple Star Award. This honor is bestowed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. It acknowledges schools that demonstrate a commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families.

The schools awarded for this academic year include Brighton Elementary School, Churchland High School, Cradock Elementary School, Douglass Park Elementary School, Park View Elementary School, Waters Middle School, and Waterview Elementary School.

Currently, PPS has 15 schools with Purple Star status. The district aims to have all its schools achieve this designation in the coming year to become a "Purple Star division." For further information about the Purple Star designation, individuals are encouraged to visit the VDOE webpage.
