To celebrate the people, businesses, organizations, and attractions that make Newport News beautifully diverse and unique, the city is hosting a “Made in Newport News” event on Saturday, August 12 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at City Center at Oyster Point.  This free event includes live music and entertainment, art experiences, a beer garden, food, businesses, family activities, and more!  Local entertainers will perform on a stage in front of the five-acre outdoor fountain throughout the afternoon.

“Newport News is home to iconic businesses, artists, singers, athletes, creators, and others,” said Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. “This breakthrough event gives us the opportunity to showcase local talent and tell the authentic Newport News story. We look forward to welcoming residents and guests to City Center on August 12 to honor our diverse and innovative city.”

Asa Jackson, Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Contemporary Arts Network (CAN), is developing additional programming to take place in stores along Mariner’s Row in City Center during and after the event.  Plans include:

  • Made in Newport News Pop-up Market Place: A community marketplace consisting of Newport News-based creatives, makers, and brands
  • Made in Newport News Arts Exhibition: A group installation featuring the work of artists from or based in Newport News.
  • Made in Newport News Multimedia Pop-up:  Podcasts and filmed performances (musical, comedy, poetry, etc.) from Newport News-based creatives.
  • Made in Newport News Fashion House (Haus): A fashion pop-up that includes well-known brands from Newport News.
Promotional spaces for iconic Newport News businesses or organizations are available for free on a very limited basis.  If you are interested in finding out how to participate, email madeinnewportnews@nnva.gov by Tuesday, August 1.  Participants must be a unique Newport News-based business or organization.

In 2022, the city launched a new brand and strategic message – Newport News: Built on Breakthroughs.  “Made in Newport News” was created to recognize the new brand and create excitement for the transformation that is taking place throughout the city.
