11

Hampton University issued the following announcement on Sept. 24

Hampton University was on full display Wednesday morning as part of ESPN’s, the world-wide leader in sports, “First Take” morning show, as this weeks featured institution in the “HBCU Wednesday’s” series.

“We are so pleased that a popular program such as “First Take” featured Hampton University for an entire episode. Many thanks to Stephen A. Smith, a graduate of an HBCU, for utilizing his celebrity and reach to make a positive impact for so many of our institutions,” said Dr. William R. Harvey, Hampton University President. “It is empowering to know that ESPN recognizes the national treasures that HBCUs are to the entire nation.”

The very special edition of “First Take” spotlighted Hampton University’s rich history, beautiful campus, legendary leadership, administrators, students, alumni, the proton therapy cancer treatment center and the Marching Force. Dr. Harvey delivered a special message with a personal invitation to Stephen A. Smith to return to the campus. Select students provided testimonials on why they love Hampton. Other students submitted questions specifically for Smith, ranging from Super Bowl predictions to the impact of the new “name, image or likeness” rule in collegiate sports, specifically as it relates to HBCU athletes.

Hampton University Softball stand-out Mo’Ne Davis was also interviewed live during the broadcast about her past success in the Little League World Series, choosing to attend an HBCU and her thoughts on her hometown Philadelphia 76ers.

“The decision to come here was easy for me,” said Davis. I was looking at the school for the educational aspect and not just for sports, although all the girls and coaches are amazing. I’ve really bonded well with my team. The Scripps Howard program is what really caught my eye. I wanted to choose a school that would set me up for success and for my future.

Stephen A. Smith, who is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, has used his platform to highlight HBCUs for several years.  The popular sports talk show showcased four HBCUs in February and resumed featuring one HBCU a week in August.
