Cost of college went up for all students at Thomas Nelson Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 2.7 percent for 2018-19 at Thomas Nelson Community College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Virginia residents paid $4,806 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $127 more than the $4,679 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 123.3 percent more than residents this year, or $10,734. Their price tag grew 1.2 percent from $10,607 in 2017-18.

About 88 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Virginia residents. About 4 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 62 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 394 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.9 million and 131 students took out student loans totaling more than $635,584.

Including all undergraduates (7,685), 3,963 students used grants or scholarships totaling $12.6 million, and 1,310 students took out $7.1 million in federal student loans.
