A winter storm is expected to bring up to four inches of snow to the Hampton area, affecting various facilities and services. The National Weather Service predicts that snowfall will begin early Friday evening and continue overnight into Saturday morning. Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible and exercise caution when outside or driving.
In response to the anticipated weather conditions, several facilities in Hampton will be closed on Saturday. These include all public libraries, community centers, neighborhood centers, parks such as Bluebird Gap Farm and Air Power Park, the Hampton History Museum, the Hampton Visitor Center, the Charles H. Taylor Art Center, and the American Theatre. Additionally, both The Hamptons and Woodlands golf courses will be closed.
All Saturday programs at Hampton schools have been canceled. However, some events are still scheduled at certain locations pending further updates. These include the Virginia Duals at Hampton Coliseum, a Gun & Knife Show at the Hampton Convention Center, and a William & Mary Swim Meet at the Hampton Aquaplex.
The Virginia Peninsula Education Foundation (Delta Beta Lam) has rescheduled their Martin Luther King Breakfast for January 15, 2025. Meanwhile, the Boo Williams Invitational Track Meet has been postponed with new dates yet to be announced.
The Virginia Air and Space Science Center will remain closed on Saturday. The Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center along with the Casemate Museum will open later than usual at 11 a.m. All events organized by Hampton City Schools for Saturday and Sunday have been canceled.
For those needing shelter from freezing temperatures during this period of severe weather, the Night's Welcome program offers overnight accommodation through local churches. Currently hosted by First Baptist Church at 229 N. King St., it operates nightly from 6 p.m.-7 a.m., with guests required to arrive by 9 p.m.
