The National Weather Service office in Wakefield has issued a heat advisory for Hampton and the entire region until 8 p.m., with afternoon temperatures reaching 95 degrees and heat indexes climbing over 100.
Residents are encouraged to stay indoors if possible, and to stay safe and hydrated outdoors. Anyone needing relief from the heat can use the city's public libraries and its community and neighborhood centers as cooling sites. The Office of Emergency Management will monitor conditions and determine if further steps are necessary.
Some precautionary measures include:
• Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
• Do not leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures within a matter of minutes.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.
