Alan K. Archer, the Acting City Manager of Newport News, has been chosen as the new City Manager after an extensive search process. The Newport News City Council made the appointment during a Special Meeting on December 18, 2023. Archer's promotion comes after interviews with candidates from across the country and input from community leaders.

Mayor Phillip Jones expressed confidence in Archer's leadership abilities, stating, "Alan has proven himself to be a thoughtful leader, showing concern for the community and city staff. Our shared commitment to the well-being and prosperity of our community remains steadfast." Mayor Jones also highlighted the city's continued efforts to thrive and move forward under Archer's leadership.

Archer has been serving as the Acting City Manager since August and has been a part of the Newport News community since 2006. He initially joined as an Assistant City Manager and has since held various roles in both Newport News and Hopewell, including City Manager, Assistant City Manager, and Director of Human Resources. He has also worked in Petersburg, where he held positions such as Assistant to the City Manager, Recreation Department Interim Director, and Main Street Project Manager.

Expressing gratitude for the appointment, Archer said, "I appreciate the confidence that City Council has shown in me, and I am honored to accept the position of City Manager. Newport News has been my home for seventeen years, and this is an exciting opportunity to serve a vibrant and diverse community. The privilege of leading this organization fills me with great resolve, and I am deeply committed to pursuing City Council’s strategic priorities and the success of our community."

Archer's qualifications include a Master of Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from James Madison University.
