Kohl’s Reinforces Commitment to Accessibility This National Disability Employment Awareness Month

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October is our chance to give  tribute to our associates with disabilities and educate ourselves about their everyday experiences. Embracing our associates for who they are is the right thing to do, so we’ve put programs and practices in place to create lasting change for our people – no matter their abilities.

Our People Continue to Fight the Stigmas Surrounding Disabilities

In life, it’s what you can do that matters. That’s why our diverseAbilities Business Resource Group (dABRG) is encouraging associates to reject the stereotypes and break down barriers those with disabilities face. In recognition of NDEAM, the dABRG will welcome a guest speaker from Disability:IN, collaborate with Milwaukee Film to view a film focused on the stigmas surrounding people with disabilities and participate in community volunteer events. The group will also host a d-SAN conversation on ADHD. d-SAN conversations were formed to build relationships across the business and encourage real discussion for shared support and advocacy.

“We are proud to come together and shine a light on equal representation for our associates with disabilities,” said Peter Riley, Kohl’s Southwest SVP territory manager and dABRG executive sponsor. “Many of us in the dABRG have lived-in experiences or have been caretakers and supporters of someone with a disability. So we are aware of the stigmas and barriers that face this group every day. Knowing diverse perspectives make us stronger, we will continue to bring associates together to address these challenges and support people of all physical abilities.”

Advocating for Inclusivity Year Round

In order to embed equity, diversity and inclusion in everything we do, we remain committed to listening, learning and taking action. Our Brave and Courageous Conversations series continues to bolster candid discussions in a variety of formats to help meet the evolving needs of our associates and provide an opportunity for authentic and honest dialogue. This month, the session will feature “Day in a Life”, an exercise in empathy where volunteers navigate their day with a simulated disability and will discuss their experiences and have a  guided talk back conversation.

“Kohl’s is proud to celebrate our associates with disabilities and continue to offer supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices,” said Michelle A. Banks, Kohl’s chief diversity and inclusion officer. “We know living a fulfilled life is different for each and every one of us. By listening and understanding these differences, we have been able to ensure equal opportunity for all associates as well as create a culture at Kohl’s that places inclusivity at the forefront.”
