The city marked a significant milestone in its downtown waterfront improvement project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held this morning. This event celebrated the completion of the first phase of the South King Street/Rudd Lane Area Improvement Project, aimed at enhancing access and reducing flooding along the Hampton River.
The project is located behind key landmarks such as the Virginia Air & Space Science Center and the Virginia Tech AREC seafood facility. Crofton Construction Services Inc. was responsible for Phase One, which involved constructing a steel sheet pile bulkhead with a concrete cap to replace an older wooden structure. Additionally, a 10-foot wide wooden pier was installed.
Mayor Donnie Tuck expressed optimism about the project's future, stating, “There’s a sense that we’re really just getting started here on our downtown waterfront,” adding that it will make the area "safer, cleaner and more accessible."
City Manager Mary Bunting highlighted the broader vision for the waterfront's role in community life. She remarked, "This is just the beginning of an exciting journey for the waterfront," emphasizing that it lays "the foundation of something much bigger" for Hampton residents.
Future improvements are planned for South King Street and Rudd Lane, including additional on-street parking and sidewalks. However, there is currently no timeline set for these developments.
