The City Council of Hampton recognized two local women for their contributions to the community during Wednesday's legislative session. Historian Margaret Wilson received acknowledgment for winning the Hospitality Hero Award from the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging and Travel Association. She addressed the council about Aberdeen Gardens' historical significance. Retired educator Gwyndolyn Lomax, alongside other educators and students from Hampton University, was honored for promoting Lights Out After School Day on October 16.

During the evening session, Patrick Hartig from the Norfolk district office of the Drug Enforcement Administration delivered a presentation on fentanyl overdose dangers. He emphasized taking only doctor-prescribed medication and directed residents to dea.gov/onepill for more information on the DEA’s “One Pill Can Kill” campaign.

The council approved a rezoning application by Cornerstone Custom Homes LLC to construct two homes at 67 W. Little Back River Road.

Earlier in the day, Senior Deputy City Attorney Brandi Law presented a proposed ordinance targeting illegal ATV and dirt bike operations on city streets. With a reported 140 percent increase in such activities in 2022-23, Hampton seeks to follow Norfolk's lead in addressing this issue through legislation that allows vehicle seizure and impoundment.

The council plans to vote on this ordinance at its next meeting on October 23.

Additionally, the council reviewed three funding options for outside agencies supporting city departments, aiming to include more grassroots organizations.

City Manager Mary Bunting introduced Kwasi Obeng as the new assistant city manager, succeeding Steven Bond who became a general district court judge. Obeng will manage public safety and youth services operations.
