Hampton residents have observed an increase in minor water leaks, compounded by a staffing shortage at Newport News Waterworks, the utility servicing most of the Peninsula region.

Newport News Waterworks is actively addressing the issue, currently managing a backlog involving dozens of active leaks across the Peninsula. Due to staffing shortages, some repairs, even for minor leaks, may take up to six months to complete. Many of Hampton's water pipes are decades old, leading to more frequent leaks. Although Newport News Waterworks is investing in infrastructure upgrades, the volume of leaks is straining its resources.

The utility continues to prioritize emergency repairs, which are generally executed on the day they are reported.

To address the issue, Newport News Waterworks is actively recruiting equipment operators to expand their repair crews. Competitive salaries and benefits are being offered to attract qualified individuals.

Residents are urged to report any new leaks or water-related issues to 311 or Newport News Waterworks directly at 757-926-1000. By doing this, residents can help prioritize repairs and contribute to the solution.
