The City of Hampton will initiate a traffic camera enforcement program on August 1, focusing on red light violations and speeding in school zones as part of a broader public safety initiative.
Starting August 1, weather permitting, cameras will monitor red light violations from 3-6 p.m. on weekdays at the Mallory Street Bridge in Phoebus and Settlers Landing Road near Hampton University. These locations are critical for motorists heading toward eastbound Interstate 64 during rush hour. The objective is to deter drivers from using residential neighborhoods as shortcuts to reach the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
For the first 30 days, violators will receive written warnings without citations. After this grace period, those caught on camera will be fined $50.
The second phase of the program coincides with the start of the school year on August 26. Cameras will be placed in school zones to catch speeders who ignore electronic notices of reduced speed limits during student arrival and departure times. Initially, seven schools with consistent speeding issues will be targeted, expanding to at least 12 school zones eventually. Similar to the red light cameras, there will be a 30-day grace period during which violators will receive warnings before fines of $100 are imposed.
The city is collaborating with Verra Mobility for the implementation of this program.
