July 8, 2024 — The Hampton City Council will convene for its regular work and legislative sessions on Wednesday. The agendas include a briefing on crime statistics and a request to impose an additional $200 fine on motorists cited for speeding in a specific residential corridor in Wythe.
The council's work session is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the legislative session at 6:30 p.m., both taking place in chambers on the eighth floor of City Hall, located at 22 Lincoln St. These meetings are open to the public and will be broadcast on the city’s TV channel (Cox 47, Verizon 22) and streamed live at hampton.gov/livetv.
Following a Public Works traffic study that indicated many motorists were speeding near the intersection of Shell Road and Greenbriar Avenue, a four-way stop was implemented with clear signage warning of the new traffic pattern. Residents have reported that the stop sign has not sufficiently mitigated dangerous driving behaviors in their neighborhood. This week, Public Works will request an ordinance imposing an additional $200 fine on top of any existing speeding tickets within that corridor. If approved by City Council on Wednesday, the ordinance will take immediate effect.
The legislative session will also feature a public hearing concerning a block grant and a partnership program potentially included in the Fiscal Year 2025 budget.
During the afternoon work session, there will be a police briefing comparing crime data and discussing police division resources. Additionally, there will be an update regarding the city's preparations for the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season.
Both meetings will consider appointments to several local boards and commissions.
