On May 20, 2024, the Hampton City Council will convene for a Wednesday afternoon work session. The agenda includes updates on Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC), the city's Natural Infrastructure Resilience Plan, and branding initiatives for the Hampton Coliseum area.

In addition to these discussions, the Council will host a 6 p.m. spotlight ceremony to honor this year's valedictorians and salutatorians from Bethel, Hampton, Kecoughtan, and Phoebus high schools.

The VPCC presentation will delve into topics such as enrollment figures, the college's economic impact on the region and state, as well as plans to broaden its resources and workforce programming.

The council will also review proposals to utilize grant funding to bolster advertising and marketing efforts related to the Hampton Coliseum and the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Once a brand is established, marketing strategies will aim at attracting business-class hotel rooms, restaurants, and other amenities in the vicinity.

Furthermore, there will be a presentation of the city’s Natural Infrastructure Resiliency Plan which addresses climate change impacts and sea level rise. An open house meeting hosted by Resilient Hampton is scheduled for Thursday at the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center where residents can learn about the plan and provide their input.

During a subsequent 6:30 p.m. legislative session, consent items related to three residences planning to erect a 6-foot fence near a city drainage and utility easement will be discussed. A resolution concerning Hampton's departure from the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Authority is also on the docket. Following its closure, Hampton intends to join the Western Tidewater Regional Jail Authority which operates the Western Tidewater Jail in Suffolk.

The work session, legislative session, and spotlight ceremony are all open to public attendance on City Hall's eighth floor at 22 Lincoln St. For those unable to attend in person, meetings will be broadcast on the city’s TV channels, Cox 47 and Verizon 22, and will also be streamed live at Hampton.gov/livetv.
