On February 11th, 2024, as football fans across the nation gear up for Super Bowl LVIII, Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) is taking important steps to ensure that everyone makes it home safely after the game. With the help of Lyft, they are offering free or reduced ride-shares to alcohol-impaired drivers in the Hampton Roads area.

The 757 Sober Ride campaign, sponsored by DSHR, will be in effect from 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 11th until 1:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12th. During this six-hour period, residents age 21 and older can download the Lyft app and enter the 757 Sober Ride code to receive a no-cost (up to $15) safe transportation home. The code will only work for rides originating from or having a destination within Hampton Roads.

Jonathan Turner, the chairperson of 757 Sober Ride, emphasizes the importance of planning for a sober driver to ensure everyone's safety. He states, "Driving drunk is deadly, and no one should ever take that risk." The campaign aims to reduce injuries and fatalities in Hampton Roads by providing a convenient and accessible option for those celebrating with alcohol.

Keri Douglas, the president of Drive Safe Hampton Roads, urges designated drivers to commit to 100% sobriety to keep themselves and their friends safe. She also encourages people to report impaired drivers to local law enforcement and to intervene if they see a friend about to drive impaired. "We want everyone to enjoy the fun, no matter which team you root for!" she adds.

The 757 Sober Ride campaign has garnered support from organizations such as the Christopher King Foundation and the Virginia DMV. By promoting citizen involvement and community awareness, Drive Safe Hampton Roads aims to improve highway safety and reduce injuries and deaths from vehicle crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk-driving crashes claimed the lives of 13,384 people in 2021. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for initiatives like 757 Sober Ride to ensure that individuals have a safe and reliable option for getting home after consuming alcohol.

As the Super Bowl approaches, Drive Safe Hampton Roads is reminding everyone to plan ahead and make responsible choices. By taking advantage of the 757 Sober Ride campaign, football fans can enjoy the game and festivities while also prioritizing their safety and the safety of others on the road.

With the support of Lyft and the commitment of the community, Drive Safe Hampton Roads is working towards a future with zero deaths on the region's roadways. Together, they are making a difference and ensuring that Super Bowl Sunday is a night of celebration, unity, and above all, safety.
