4

City of Hampton issued the following announcement on Jan. 8

The Virginia Department of Health will add a Covid-19 testing center to its vaccination clinic in Newport News, beginning Monday, Jan. 10. The testing center will be open by appointment from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

The testing will be done in a heated tent at Sherwood Shopping Center, 13785 Warwick Blvd. Tests will be the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests, which is more accurate than rapid tests. Results could take up to 72 hours and will be sent via text or email message. Weekend testing will be available the weekend of Jan. 29. Watch Hampton's e-newsletter for details.

Testing is by appointment only, although the associated community vaccination center accepts walk-ins for vaccinations. Appointment slots opened Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022 at noon.

The Newport News site is one of nine community testing centers announced in a press release by Gov. Ralph Northam, who said testing is “a critical tool in our fight against Covid-19.” He noted that the new testing centers will provide better access to Virginia residents at a time when rapid tests are in short supply all around the nation.

The initial funding for the $5 million project comes from the Virginia Department of Health, which is seeking FEMA funding to reimburse the expenses and continue the program going forward.
