UPDATE: No I-64 nightly detour around Mallory St. bridge yet

20

City of Hampton issued the following announcement on Oct. 21

UPDATE: Demolition is occurring on the side of the Mallory Street bridge closest to the VA  Medical Center. However, the portion of the demolition that would require a detour won't happen yet.

Check back for updates on the project.

EARLIER: During this demolition, I-64 eastbound traffic will use the Mallory Street off-ramp and on-ramp. Traffic will be reduced to one lane approaching the Mallory Street bridge, detoured onto the eastbound off-ramp to Mallory Street, and then directed back to I-64 eastbound using the on-ramp from Mallory Street. There will be a flagger helping with traffic crossing Mallory Street.

This activity over I-64 eastbound will last for approximately one week and will occur nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Mallory Street  bridge is being demolished and reconstructed in stages to ensure it remains open to both cars and pedestrians.  When the side of the bridge near Phoebus gets demolished, there will be detours for westbound I-64 drivers.
