City of Newport News issued the following announcement on Sept. 15
Runners take your marks – the 2022 Newport News One City Marathon is back and bigger than ever! Newport News will host in-person races, celebrations and activities on March 5 and 6, 2022.
“After hosting the 2021 One City Marathon virtually due to the pandemic, we look forward to welcoming runners, volunteers and families back to Newport News in 2022,” said Newport News Mayor McKinley L. Price, DDS. “The One City Marathon, as well as our other races, gives participants the opportunity to see our vibrant city and neighborhoods from a unique vantage point. It also brings our city and community together, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Thank you to our sponsors for their support of One City Marathon weekend and for helping us highlight the spirit of our great city.”
Newport News Shipbuilding is once again the Presenting Sponsor for One City Marathon weekend.

Race weekend begins on Saturday, March 5 with exciting changes. The former 8K has been reconfigured based on participant input into the Optima Health Maritime 5K at Newport News City Center. Ferguson is race weekend’s newest sponsor and is the signature supporter of the Nautical Mile, as well as activities on their newly opened campus in City Center. Tradition Brewing Company will host family friendly fun and entertainment throughout the day.
The One City Marathon takes place on Sunday, March 6. The event begins in Newport News Park and takes runners on a 26.2 mile flat and fast course down the city’s historic streets.
Sunday’s events also include a Marathon Relay and the BayPort Credit Union Half Marathon. The weekend concludes with the One City Celebration in the city’s newly established Yard District. The entire community is invited to 23rd Street to welcome runners and enjoy food, drinks, activities and vendors. This new event is hosted by Pro\vost Construction.
Since races now take place over two days, runners can participate in more than one race or register for one of two multi-race challenges to earn additional medals, special edition hats, and bragging rights. Visit the registration page for pricing and additional details.
