City of Hampton issued the following announcement on July 7
The public is invited to a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex on Wednesday, July 14. The facility, which will feature a 50-meter competition pool, 25-meter program pool, and an outdoor “Splash-Down Park,” is planned to open late next summer.
The aquatics center will serve the local community with event rentals, fitness, certified “Learn to Swim” classes, and open-swim activities for all ages. It will also be the home pool for Hampton City Schools swim teams and host regional and national swim competitions, to increase Hampton's already active youth sports tourism market. The outdoor splash park features a leisure pool, a lazy river, and two tower body slides.
The ceremony will be held Wednesday, July 14, at 10 a.m. on the site, at the corner of Pine Chapel Road and Coliseum Drive (1904 & 1908 Coliseum Drive). Construction actually began in the winter, when weather and Covid-19 restrictions made such a gathering unwise.
Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck will be speaking, along with other Hampton stakeholders, to describe the new facility and its benefits to the community. Tourism revenues from hotel stays will fund a portion of the cost, reducing the construction cost borne by Hampton residents.
Public parking is available across Pine Chapel Road at the Hampton Coliseum (enter along Coliseum Drive, and proceed to the area of the lot closest to Pine Chapel Road). The “scuttle bus,” sponsored by the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau, will be on hand for those who prefer not to walk, and crossing guards will be available for those who do. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 45 minutes. Closed-toed shoes are recommended within the construction site. Masks are required at this event for those who have not yet been fully vaccinated, and some amount of socially distanced seating will be available at the site.
