The city of Hampton has achieved a perfect score on the Municipal Equality Index, an annual evaluation conducted by the Human Rights Campaign. This index assesses how inclusive laws, policies, and services are towards the LGBTQ community.
This year, the Human Rights Campaign, recognized as the largest civil rights organization for the LGBTQ community in the United States, evaluated over 500 cities. For the second consecutive year, Hampton received a perfect score of 100.
Hampton offers various programs aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion. Among these is a free Diversity College program that highlights the importance of diversity and unity in workplaces and communities. Additionally, earlier this year, Hampton saw the opening of the LGBT Life Center. This center provides healthcare, pharmacy services, and other resources in a welcoming environment.
"Now more than ever, it's important to ensure that our LGBTQ community knows that Hampton is a safe space,” said Gabe Diaz, executive director of the city’s office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We're not just checking boxes. We're doing the work here, and it shows."
