Rivers Casino Portsmouth is celebrating its first anniversary with a special event aimed at giving back to the community. The casino's ongoing community engagement initiative, Rivers Gives, will support the Portsmouth Police Athletic League (PAL) and Portsmouth's Safety Town in partnership with the City of Portsmouth Police Department.

As part of this initiative, Rivers Casino will contribute to the enrichment of Portsmouth Safety Town, which is an educational facility designed to teach children essential safety skills. The casino will underwrite the costs to construct a miniature "Portsmouth Police Station" as part of the city's efforts to teach children safety measures through interactive experiences. This Safety Town outpost will be a community complement to the actual Portsmouth Police Substation permanently located at the casino.

"Rivers Casino Portsmouth immediately embraced the culture of philanthropy and has dedicated over 1,000 volunteer hours and donated more than $861,000 to local nonprofit organizations to date," says Roy Corby, the general manager of Rivers Casino Portsmouth.

To commemorate its first anniversary, Rivers Casino will be making a total contribution of $20,000. Two separate contributions of $10,000 each will be presented to Portsmouth Safety Town and the Portsmouth Police Athletic League.

On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Team Members of Rivers Casino Portsmouth will actively participate in constructing the new Safety Town exhibit. The check presentation ceremonies to symbolize Rivers Casino's financial support for local law enforcement and community programs will also take place on this day.

"We are proud to be a part of the Portsmouth community and to support organizations that make a positive impact on the lives of its residents," says Melissa Ramsey, the director of community relations at Rivers Casino Portsmouth.

As part of the event, there will be active construction of the miniature police station by Rivers Casino Team Members. The check presentation ceremonies will be held at Portsmouth Safety Town, located at 4404 Deep Creek Blvd., Portsmouth, Va.

Available for interviews at the event will be Roy Corby, the general manager of Rivers Casino Portsmouth, Melissa Ramsey, the director of community relations at Rivers Casino Portsmouth, Bruce LaLonde, the president of the Safety Town Advisory Committee, and Sergeant Allen Washington, the Community Enhancement Officer and PAL Coordinator with the Portsmouth Police Department.

Media are invited to cover the event and should arrive at 10:00 a.m. RSVPs can be sent to Kelli Webb at [email protected] or 757.606.0281.
