Newport News tourism has almost fully recovered to the pre-pandemic spending levels of 2019, a year used as a benchmark for COVID tracking.

“Tourism is an important industry and economic engine in Newport News,” said Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones. “We are thrilled to see increases in revenue and employment numbers, all of which can be attributed to our refocused efforts on marketing breakthrough experiences to visitors and residents. With additional projects on the horizon thanks to American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, we look forward to reaching new markets, increasing awareness of our tourism offerings, and encouraging all to discover Newport News.”

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, tourism accounted for $30.3 billion in travel spending, supported 210,721 jobs, and generated $2.2 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2022. Tourism spending saved each Virginia household approximately $880 in additional state and local tax collections in 2022.

The Virginia Tourism Corporation partnered with Tourism Economics for its 2022 Annual Economic Impact study. Figures are based on spending by travelers from within the United States on trips taken 50 miles or more away from home. Detailed economic impact data by locality is available on the Virginia Tourism Corporation website
