The City of Newport News invites you to a design-focused open house to help envision the adaptive reuse of the historic Greek Orthodox Church building located at 2591 West Avenue.
There will be two public forums on Wed., Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., and again from 4 - 7 p.m. at Coastal Fermentory, 206 23rd. St.
This Design Forum is part of an ongoing visioning and design process for the Historic Greek Orthodox Church that includes multiple stakeholder events. Ideas generated at these events will be used to create a clear design vision for the adaptive reuse of this important architectural icon. The open house format will allow you to engage at your own pace and spend as much or as little time as you wish during either of the three-hour window time slots. There is no formal presentation.
About the building: The Byzantine-style sanctuary was first constructed in 1949 as the St. Constantine and St. Helen Greek Orthodox Church. The congregation relocated in 1982, leaving the building abandoned as it stands today. The property is currently owned by the Newport News Economic Development Authority.
