The National Weather Service at Wakefield issued a hazardous weather outlook for Newport News and the rest of Hampton Roads throughout the week including thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. By Thursday night and into Friday, residents could see rain and brisk wind from Tropical Storm Idalia.

Stay informed and prepare for inclement weather:

  • Subscribe to NN Alert: Make sure you receive critical information quickly, including public safety and severe weather updates. Residents can sign up online.
  • Know Your Zone: Evacuation zones are designated A through D and provide clarity on whether you should evacuate in an emergency or shelter at home based on your physical street address and the nature of the emergency event. Review the Virginia Department of Emergency Management’s Know Your Zone program.
  • Pack a Kit: After an emergency, you may need to survive for several days with your own food, water, and other supplies. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency, including medications.
Stay on Top of Information: Follow the National Weather Service’s Wakefield office on Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) for up-to-date storm information and keep an eye on the city’s Facebook and X pages.
