Strause, Vodela Each Pick Up Two Wins as No. 37 CNU Men's Tennis Opens Year with 8-1 Win Over Virginia Wesleyan

Opening the spring schedule with an 8-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team extended it's win streak over the Marlins to 14 in a row. Senior Alec Strause and sophomore Ahun Vodela each won matches in singles and doubles to lead the way for the Captains in Saturday's season opener.

The Captains raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and then won five of the six singles bouts for the runaway victory. Vodela captured wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles while Strause earned the victory on the top line in both singles and doubles.

In doubles action, Christopher Newport quickly took a 1-0 lead when Edvard Porsmyr Hansen paired with newcomer Vincent Truong for a dominant 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. The CNU pair took down Sai Challagundla and Camden Perry for the Marlins to get the Captains out in front. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Vodela and Alex Seretis also made quick work of their opposing tandem, Hubert Pawara and Jonas Juetz, capturing an 8-3 victory.

The sweep would not be easy to come by as Christopher Newport's top tandem of Strause and Nesh Kumarasen took on Felix Bevc and Alen Curoic. The pairs battled to a 7-7 tie that would force a winner-take-all tiebreak. The Captains pair would save match point twice before pulling out a hard-fought 8-7 (10-8) victory to earn CNU the sweep heading into singles play.

Strause carried the momentum into singles action as the 20th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bevc at No. 1 singles. Porsmyr Hansen also won in straight sets over Pawara, 6-3, 6-4, in the early run of singles action, while Vodela rebounded from a first-set loss to capture a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 3.

Virginia Wesleyan earned their lone win at No. 4 with Francis Cabaddu picking up the victory. CNU would secure straight-set victories at 5 and 6 to close out the team win. Jake Dolphin downed Juetz at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) and Dawson Driscoll earned a win at No. 6 over Andreas Combos (6-1, 6-1).

Christopher Newport will return to action this Friday, February 10 against Centre College at 3:30 p.m.
