Nationally-Ranked Captains Travel to Meredith College Monday Kicking Off Five-Game Road Trip

The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will open the 2023 portion of the schedule with a five-game road trip starting on Monday afternoon as the Captains (12-0) travel to Meredith College. CNU, ranked No. 1 in the WBCA Top 25 and No. 4 in the D3hoops.com national rankings, will tip off against the Avenging Angels at 3:00 p.m.

Christopher Newport has opened the season with a perfect 12-0 record after closing the book on 2022 with a 93-60 win over Rowan University on Friday, December 30 at the Freeman Center. The win extended the program's second longest home winning streak to 34 straight games as the Captains improved to 59-2 over the last 61 games.

The Captains are returning to the Weatherspoon Athletic Center in Raleigh, N.C. for the first time since November 23, 2019 when CNU suffered it's lone loss in the all-time series against the Avenging Angels, 69-66. CNU owns a 15-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 104-48 victory at the Freeman Center a year ago.

CNU is leading the nation in scoring margin and turnover margin this season while featuring the third-ranked scoring offense in the country (90.7 ppg). Fifth-year senior guard Sondra Fan is pouring in a team-high 14.2 points per game while knocking down over 45 percent of her three-point shots (29-64), ranking ninth in Division III. Senior forward Anaya Simmons is adding 12.7 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game. Simmons is knocking down 63.6 percent of her shots, ranking fourth in the nation heading into Monday's contest.

Meredith is 1-9 overall this season while being led by senior forward Kate Perko. Perko is averaging 14.1 points and 14.2 rebounds per game.

Following the Monday afternoon matinee, the Captains will travel to Division I Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, January 4 in a game that will serve as an exhibition for the Captains and an official contest for the Hawks.
