2022 CIAA Football: Weekly Report #9
The Northern and Southern Division crowns were on the line in Week 9 and following Saturday's results, the Southern Division has been clinched while there is a new leader in the North. Fayetteville State has clinched its fifth straight CIAA Football Championship appearance while Chowan has the inside track in the North, needing just a victory or a Virginia Union loss next Saturday to clinch a Chowan appearance in Salem, VA.
Let's take a look at the week nine results for all teams across the conference:
Chowan 26, #10 Virginia Union 21 VUU: 8-1 (6-1 CIAA) Chowan: 6-3 (6-1 CIAA)
The celebration for Chowan began shortly before the final horn as Kmare Carey returned an interception 45 yards for a 26-14 lead with just 70 seconds left in the game. With the win, Chowan is in control of its own destiny and just needs a victory next week to earn its place in the 2022 CIAA Football Championship. The Hawks held the vaunted Virginia Union offense to just 14 points and the Panthers did not score in the second half until 33 seconds remaining in regulation. Before Jahkari Grant found John Jiles for a 34-yard touchdown late, Chowan scored 19 points unanswered, flipping a 14-7 deficit into the 26-14 lead. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Carey blocked a Virginia Union punt and Nic Wilson returned it 22 yards for a touchdown and Chowan's first lead with the score at 19-14. The Panthers' Jada Byers was "held" to 109 yards on 22 carries and Jiles finished with four catches for 64 yards and the score. The Hawks' Rashad McKee completed 12-of-20 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns while adding 31 yards on the ground. Chowan's Malik Tobias caught three passes for 90 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown. The Hawks, totaling seven sacks and four takeaways as a team, had multiple playmakers on defense including Montre Moore (game-high 10 tackles, plus a sack) and Traevon Mitchell, who racked up seven tackles, 3.5 stops for a loss, and two sacks. VUU's Shamar Graham had a team-high eight tackles.

Bowie State 36, Elizabeth City State 29 BSU: 5-3 (4-2 CIAA) ECSU: 2-7 (2-5 CIAA)
With 1:05 remaining in regulation, Elizabeth City State's Carleton Thomas tied the game at 29 with a four-yard run. On the ensuing kickoff, Kwincy Hall received the kick and raced 88 yards for a Bowie State touchdown and the game-winner. Elizabeth City State very nearly forced overtime (on a 24-yard completion from Chase Williams) but Zion Riddick was tackled at the one by Bowie State's Rodney Patterson. The Vikings held the lead twice in this game, owning a 14-13 halftime lead after a 20-yard touchdown to Josiah Hayes from Williams and a third quarter 21-20 lead after an eight-yard Williams run. Despite Bowie State outgaining ECSU 409-280 in total yards of offense, the Vikings had more first downs (23-17) and were better in the redzone (3-of-4 compared to 2-of-5 for the Bulldogs). Additionally, Hall granted the Bulldogs great field position with 240 return yards (101 punt return and 139 kick return). BSU's Dion Golatt Jr. threw for 261 yards and a touchdown on 12 completions and ECSU's Williams had 130 yards passing and 60 rushing. It was Darian King who led the Vikings in rushing with 70 yards. The Bulldogs' Keith Williams had a team-high 10 tackles and Joshua Pryor had seven tackles, two stops for losses, and two quarterback hurries. Teonne Porter led ECSU with eight tackles.

Virginia State 42, Lincoln (PA) 21 VSU: 4-3 (3-2 CIAA) LUPA: 2-6 (2-4 CIAA)
With the game tied at 14 early in the third quarter, Virginia State outscored the Lions, 28-7, the rest of the way. The Trojans' Upton Bailey rushed for touchdowns of 17, 43, and 52 yards in the second half en route to 183 yards rushing on 15 carries total. Fellow Trojans Darius Hagans rushed for 153 yards and Jordan Davis passed for a touchdown and ran for another. Trailing 35-21 in the fourth quarter, the Lions failed to convert a fourth-and-10 and VSU's Bailey scored on the next play to effectively seal the contest. Isaiah Freeman accounted for all three of Lincoln's touchdowns, rushing for scores of four yards and 29 yards and finding Dah'mear Triplett for 19 yards. Freeman finished with 204 yards passing and a team-high 72 rushing yards. Lincoln's Jahad Green had a game-high 14 tackles and two pass deflections while Jesse Jackson had a team-high two stops for a loss along with 11 tackles and a forced fumble.

Livingstone 12, St. Augustine's 7 LC: 3-6 (2-5 CIAA) SAU: 1-8 (1-6 CIAA)
Livingstone's Silas Cruse threw two touchdowns and the Blue Bears' defense forced two second half turnover-on-downs in the redzone to defeat the Falcons. Cruse connected with Lasirton Bryant for a 53-yard touchdown for the game's opening score and then found Matthew Henry for 33 yards and the go-ahead score with under 11 minutes remaining. St. Augustine earned six more first downs (14) than the Blue Bears but the Falcons couldn't generate enough offense in a fourth quarter that featured two three-and-outs and a turnover-on-downs at Livingstone's 19-yard line. Cruse totaled 146 yards passing and two touchdowns on 11-of-16 passing. St. Aug's offense was led by Avonte George (93 rushing yards) and Cameron Moore (41 yards and the lone Falcons touchdown). Collin Guillory led Livingstone with 11 tackles and an interception, which he returned for 66 yards. The Blue Bears' Ryan Hatter Jr. added 10 tackles, three stops for a loss, and a quarterback hurry. The Falcons were led by Lee Sales and his team-high seven tackles and two stops for a loss.

Johnson C. Smith 7, Winston-Salem State 28 JCSU: 2-6 (2-5 CIAA) WSSU: 3-5 (3-3 CIAA)
Winston-Salem State has now won three consecutive games by holding the Golden Bulls to their lowest points total this season. The first score came from the Rams with 4:38 left in the third quarter when a Trevor Williard forced fumble resulted in a Kairon Martin fumble recovery for a touchdown. In addition to a fumble recovery for a touchdown, the Rams scored a pick-six, a kick return touchdown, and a rushing touchdown for the final score. JCSU cut the deficit to 14-7 with a six-yard Robert Adams touchdown run but WSSU's Narique Smith answered immediately with an 85-yard kickoff return touchdown. Jaylen Gullatte provided the nail in the coffin with a 35-yard pick-six. The Rams' Justin Fleming was all over the field with six tackles, a team-high 3.5 stops for a loss, a forced fumble, and a blocked JCSU punt while Narique Smith added an interception for the Rams. Sharrod Simmon and Benari Black each had 11 tackles with Simmon adding three tackles for a loss and two sacks.

Shaw 20, Fayetteville State 28 Shaw: 3-5 (3-3 CIAA) FSU: 7-2 (6-1 CIAA)
For the fifth consecutive time, the Broncos have clinched the CIAA Southern Division title to earn yet another appearance in the 2022 CIAA Football Championship. Fayetteville State jumped out to a 14-0 start and then while leading 28-21 in the fourth quarter, the Broncos' defense forced two turnovers (fumble and turnover-on-downs) to close out the game. The Broncos outgained the Bears, 319-189, and first downs, 17-9. In the second half, FSU's Demari Daniels ran for a 13-yard touchdown and connected with Ellijah Henry for a 56-yard touchdown. Shaw had an answer for each of those FSU touchdowns with scores from Sidney Gibbs (37-yard touchdown run) and Andre Brandon Jr. (three-yard run). Shaw's Gibbs had a game-high 77 yards and two touchdowns, followed by the Broncos' Derrick Alston Jr.'s 71 yards and a touchdown. Henry was the game's leading receiver with three catches for 52 yards, plus 33 yards on the ground. Keshaun Denham led the Bears with 13 tackles, two stops for a loss, and an interception and Za'Heir Barnes-Vaughn added 11 tackles, a sack, and a pass breakup. For FSU, Dylan Morris and Cameron Merrell were tied for the team-high in tackles with 10.
