CNU Senior Goalkeeper Ethan Larson Nets Third C2C Defensive Player of the Week Recognition
For the third time this season, in his first as the starting goalkeeper, Christopher Newport graduate student Ethan Larson (Hampton, Va.) has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Larson secured the first and last recognition of the year, while also picking up the honor in Week 3 of the season.
With his selection, the vaunted Christopher Newport defense earned the honor in six of a possible nine weeks of the season. Larson picked up the honor three times, Jonathon Leiding twice, and Kyle Stenzel once.
This week, Larson played the majority of a 3-0 shutout at Salisbury University that secured the regular season championship and top seed in the coming C2C Tournament. With just over 80 minutes of action against the Sea Gulls, Larson made five saves without surrendering a goal. He lowered his goals-against average to 0.72 and lifted his save percentage to .787 on the season, having faced 113 total shots.
In the road matchup at Salisbury, the Captains earned the team's tenth shutout of the season to close out the regular season. It stands tied for the third most shutouts in a single campaign and moves CNU up to seventh nationally in shutout percentage with a .667 rate. Led by Larson in goal, the Captains rank 25th nationally in team GAA.
Heading into the conference tournament, Larson ranks 32nd in the country in GAA and 23rd in total shutouts.
Christopher Newport earned the No. 1 seed in the 2022 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, which will be played this weekend at Salisbury University. CNU earned a first-round bye and will play at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4 against either #4 UW-Whitewater or #5 UC Santa Cruz.
