2022 CIAA Football: Weekly Report #8
Week Eight saw entertaining finishes in Bowie, MD and Charlotte, NC and Virginia Union and Fayetteville State handle business to retain its division leads and there were several impressive rushing performances.
Let's take a look at the week eight results for all teams across the conference:
#10 Virginia Union 45, Lincoln (PA) 20 VUU: 8-0 (6-0 CIAA) LUPA: 2-5 (1-4 CIAA)
Nationally ranked Virginia Union jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead and then poured on 21 points in the fourth quarter to erase any doubts in this contest against the Lions. Harlon Hill Candidate Jada Byers rushed for 187 yards and four touchdowns on 40 rushes and caught four passes for 38 yards for the Panthers and Jahkari Grant added 236 yards and a touchdown on 17-of-25 passing through the air. Lincoln (PA)'s freshman signalcaller Isaiah Freeman threw for 228 yards and a touchdown and ran for a team-high 69 yards and a second score. Antwain Banks was Freeman's leading receiver with four catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. Kai Gray's 17 total tackles for the Lions ties a season-high for most tackles in a single game in the CIAA and Gray forced two fumbles that were recovered by the Lions. The Panthers' defense were led by Shamar Graham and his seven tackles.

Chowan 21, Bowie State 15 Chowan: 5-3 (5-1 CIAA) BSU: 4-3 (3-2 CIAA)
It was a wild ride in the fourth quarter as Bowie State was stopped in the red zone by the Hawks on a 4th-and-one with 45 seconds remaining in the game. The Bulldogs took a 15-13 lead with 6:19 left in the game after Corey Johnson's 54-yard rush set up a one-yard Larry Williams touchdown. 15 seconds later, Chowan retook the lead with Malik Tobias making an acrobatic catch and going 61 yards for a touchdown from Rashad McKee. Bowie State's Dion Golatt Jr. then drove the Bulldogs to the Hawks' 18-yard line before Chowan's Montre Moore stopped Samuel Doku for no gain on fourth down. McKee passed for a season-high 270 yards and three touchdowns and added 56 yards on the ground. The Hawks' Laurence King had six catches for 114 yards and a score and Bulldog Kwincy Hall matched him for seven receptions for 114 and a touchdown. Moore had six tackles and a team-high 3.5 stops for a loss. The real difference in this game though may have been Caleb Hester, who blocked two Bowie State extra-point attempts. Kennypride Toh led the Bulldogs with seven tackles and 2.5 stops for a loss. Chowan's win sets up a very important clash against visiting Virginia Union next week which could decide who represents the Northern Division on November 12th in the 2022 CIAA Football Championship.

Virginia State 34, Elizabeth City State 12 VSU: 4-3 (3-2 CIAA) ECSU: 2-6 (2-4 CIAA)
Virginia State rode the legs of Upton Bailey and Darius Hagans as the pair combined for 226 of the Trojans' 278 rushing yards in the win. Bailey rushed for 115 yards on 14 carries and Hagans had 111 yards rushing and a touchdown, plus a team-leading 51 receiving yards (four catches). The Vikings also had success on the ground, rushing for a season-high 149 yards behind Darian King's 59 yards and Wynton Ruth's 44 yards and a touchdown. Virginia State's Zion Johnson had a game-high 15 tackles and three tackles for a loss. ECSU were led by Teonne Porter's 13 tackles and Traveon Freshwater's 12 stops and two pass deflections.

Shaw 28, Livingstone 14 Shaw: 3-5 (3-3 CIAA) LC: 2-6 (1-5 CIAA)
Andre Brandon Jr. rushed for 306 yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries to guide Shaw to a win on its Homecoming. In the process, Brandon Jr. broke a school record for rushing yards and rushing attempts and became just the second player in the CIAA to rush for over 300 yards this season. The Bears jumped out to a 21-0 lead before Livingstone cut the deficit to 21-14 in the third quarter. Brandon Jr. accounted for 311 of the Bears' 372 yards and he put the game away with a late fourth quarter score from five yards out. Livingstone's Matthew Henry caught four passes for 82 yards and the Blue Bears' only offensive touchdown. Defensively, the Blue Bears' Kevin Larkins Jr. had three interceptions, along with nine total tackles and two pass breakups. Larkins Jr. is the first CIAA player since 2019 to record three interceptions in a single game. Livingstone's Ryan Hatter Jr. added a team-high 10 tackles and three stops for a loss, in addition to forcing a fumble that was recovered for a Blue Bears' touchdown. Shaw's Jaleel Scroggins and Jaden Clark each logged six tackles and an interception.

Fayetteville State 21, Johnson C. Smith 13 FSU: 6-2 (5-1 CIAA) JCSU: 2-5 (2-4 CIAA)
Elijah Henry took a screen pass from Caden Davis 46 yards for a touchdown and Davis rushed for another touchdown four seconds before halftime for a 21-6 Broncos' lead. Johnson C. Smith actually outgained FSU in this game, 297-226, and had seven more first downs (20) but in a one-possession game, JCSU had drives of nine plays, nine plays, and 12 plays result in zero points in the fourth quarter. The Golden Bulls' Jacob Newman rushed for a game-high 105 yards and the third quarter touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-13. Henry had a season-high 92 yards receiving on six catches , in addition to 28 yards rushing and JCSU's Brevin Caldwell finished with seven receptions for 73 yards. Sharrod Simmon's 17 tackles for JCSU ties a season-high for most tackles in a single game in the CIAA. FSU's Quantavius Randolph was credited with three pass breakup and he returned a blocked Golden Bulls' field goal 73 yards for the first score of the game.

Winston-Salem State 41, Saint Augustine's 14 WSSU: 2-5 (2-3 CIAA) SAU: 1-7 (1-5 CIAA)
The Rams followed up their first win last week with an emphatic victory this week, scoring a season-high 41 points and gaining a season-high 456 yards of offense. WSSU was sporting a 20-14 entering the fourth quarter but Nicholas Jackson threw two touchdowns and rushed for a third for the final score. The freshman quarterback went 11-of-15 passing for 228 yards and three touchdowns and R.J. Mobley caught four passes for 120 yards and two scores. The Rams' Jahtwan Strafford rushed for a game-high 185 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Chris Perkins connected with Jaylen Siemons for the Falcons' lone offensive touchdown. St. Aug's Lee Sales and Jamieson Alston each recorded a game-high six tackles.
