Evans and Geter Lauded as Defense Receives Two Weekly Football Honors from New Jersey Athletic Conference

Two members of the Christopher Newport University defense received honors on Monday from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Michael Evans was selected as the league's Defensive Player of the Week, and Yasir Geter was chosen the Defensive Rookie of the Week following the Captains' 31-7 triumph Saturday over William Paterson University.

Evans, a junior linebacker from Chesapeake, Va., got the Captains off on the right foot Saturday, by returning an interception 30 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring vs. the Pioneers. He later posted the only sack of the day for CNU, and ended up with three tackles, including two solo stops. This marks the second time this season Evans has won the weekly honor.

Geter, a freshman defensive back from Suffolk, Va., also registered an outstanding effort with a team-high five tackles, three of which were unassisted. This is the second time this season Geter has been honored by the NJAC.

Evans and Geter are part of a Christopher Newport defense that has excelled all season, and has held opponents scoreless in each of the second halves of the last two games. Saturday, the Captains gave up just 99 total yards for the day to William Paterson in the 24-point Homecoming Weekend victory at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. CNU is now allowing an average of just 15.1 points per game, and the Captains' two losses this year have come by a total of seven points.

Christoopher Newport has now won four straight games, and the Captains are 5-2 overall and 3-0 atop the NJAC tied with Salisbury. Paul Crowley's squad travels to Montclair, N.J., Saturday to take on the Red Hawks of Montclair State. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m.
