Bowie State Women’s Tennis Among 3 CIAA Schools Headed South for 2022 HBCU National Tournament

The Bowie State women's tennis team heads to Atlanta, Ga., for the 21st Annual HBCU National Tennis Championships Sept. 15-18 at the South Fulton Tennis Center.

In addition to Bowie State, two other CIAA schools (Johnson C. Smith University and Shaw University) will be contending for the crown in Atlanta, Ga.

The HBCU National Tennis Championship mission is to provide schools with the opportunity to compete in a tournament during the Fall to allow players to meet, compete, and be crowned National Champions at the end of the tournament, both individually and as teams.

The Bulldogs had a historic season during the spring 2022 campaign, earning the programs first ever CIAA Northern Division title behind CIAA Player of the Year, Afruica Gentle (Georgetown, Guyana), and All-CIAA honorees in Kayla Lowery (Cleveland, OH) and Tamia Byrom (Upper Marlboro, MD). BSU finished the year with a program-best 11-4 overall record and 8-2 mark against league opponents led by Paul Brown who is now in his sixth season at the helm of the program.

Bowie State returns seven players from the 2022 season and adds one newcomer.
