Shaw leads with four selections on the preseason team, returning 2021 first-teamers Kamille Patrick and Noelani Beard, in addition to Brown and Clark. Elizabeth City State has three selections, followed by Claflin's two.

Fayetteville State was picked to win the Southern Division title for the third time in as many seasons while Elizabeth City State was predicted to win the Northern Division. The Broncos were also predicted to finish atop the conference overall.

Last season, FSU finished with a 14-2 record in the CIAA (24-8 overall) and won a second straight CIAA championship, all under the guidance of Head Coach Dr. Reeshemah Johnson.

The Vikings, led by 2021 CIAA Coach of the Year David Brooks, finished last season tied for second in the Northern Division with a 13-3 conference record and an overall mark of 27-6.
