Christopher Newport University renews its longest-running rivalry Saturday, as the Captains host the 11th-ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium for the New Jersey Athletic Conference battle.Prior to kickoff, CNU's senior student-athletes will be honored as they play for the final time at home, and at halftime Homecoming ceremonies will take place.
The Captains have won their last two games, and are now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC. Salisbury is 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play entering Saturday's contest, and the Sea Gulls are riding a four-game winning streak.
"We're so excited heading into this game, this is a tremendous opportunity for our team," Head Coach Art Link said. "We've won the last two weeks and have shown what we're capable of on offense, defense, and on special teams. Salisbury will present some great challenges, and they're solid in every area. I'm looking forward to honoring our seniors and competing at a high level, and hope to have a big Homecoming crowd cheering us on."

The Captains and Sea Gulls will be playing for the 20th time, the longest series in CNU football history with any opponent. The Sea Gulls have a 14-5 lead in the series, and have won the last five meetings, most recently a 30-5 victory on March 21st during the mini spring season. CNU's first game ever played on September 1, 2001, was against Salisbury, a 21-7 Sea Gulls win.
Last week, the Captains recorded a 21-14 victory at the College of New Jersey for their second straight win. Sophomore quarterback Matt Dzierski had a hand in all three touchdowns, throwing two scoring passes and running for one as well. He was selected the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Week, and also named to the honor roll by the Touchdown Club of DC. Dzierski has now thrown 13 touchdown passes this season, has run for seven scores, and has completed 67 percent of his passes, 18th in the country in Division III.
Christopher Newport's top receiver is fifth-year senior Garrison Mayo, who has caught 45 passes for 595 yards and five scores this fall. Mayo has now scored 13 career touchdowns as a Captain. On defense, fifth-year senior Sean Wilkinson continues to lead the squad in tackles, with 58 total, and has also recorded a sack and an interception this year. Mayo and Wilkinson will be two of 24 Captains honored pre-game during Senior Day ceremonies.
Sherman Wood's Salisbury team is coming off a 38-6 triumph last Saturday at home over Kean University, a victory that moved the Gulls into sole possession of first place in the conference standings. Wood is in his 23rd season leading the Gulls, who are 8-1 all-time in games in Newport News.
Gates at TowneBank Stadium will open at 12 noon on Saturday, and tickets will be on sale prior to kickoff. The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
