City of Hampton issued the following announcement on Oct. 21
Hampton will receive a $100,000 grant as part of $4.4 million in state grants for 33 investment projects that will create and support business development, economic recovery, and the redevelopment of industrial and commercial structures.
Hampton's grant to the Economic Development Authority will create a Peninsula expansion of the 757 Makerspace that exists currently in Norfolk. That program includes an established community workshop and studio space. Since 2013, it has provided tools and equipment for designers, technologists, innovators, artists and creatives in a shared space to bring creative ideas and works to life. During this time, it has helped the Southside to open seven maker labs in local schools, worked with the libraries to expand their maker-related offerings and to conduct "train the trainers" courses to help educate makerspace staff.
The 757 Makerspace in Norfolk has grown its membership exponentially over the past eight years and has outgrown two prior buildings before moving into its current 28,000-square-foot building. The Makerspace is also a co-working studio and a business location for local startups.
The Hampton office is expected to be on Fort Monroe and means that people from Hampton to Williamsburg — and even Richmond — can avoid the bridge-tunnel. There are three universities in the area, as well as NASA Langley, Jefferson Lab, arts institutions, and StartWheel, an online platform for business startups. The program will also work with Hampton City Schools, which already has two Makerspaces, and may offer summer camps.
