Virginia health officials have announced a fish consumption advisory for the Chickahominy Watershed. The advisory is due to elevated levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) found in certain fish species, including creek chubsucker, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, and sunfish.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) stated that “fish tissue samples show elevated PFOS levels in certain fish species.” These levels exceed what is considered safe for long-term human consumption. The samples were collected from November 2021 through September 2023 from the Chickahominy River and White Oak Swamp.

Brookie Crawford, the media contact for this announcement, emphasized the importance of adhering to the advisory to ensure public safety.
