Newport News Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany III has been elected to a one-year term as Vice President of the Virginia Municipal League (VML) Board of Directors. The election took place during VML’s annual conference in Roanoke, Virginia.

The VML is an organization that advocates for cities, towns, and counties throughout Virginia. It provides training, resources, and legislative support for municipal leaders across the state.

“I am honored to be elected as Vice President of the Virginia Municipal League’s Board of Directors,” said Vice Mayor Bethany. “This opportunity allows me to represent the City of Newport News while collaborating with dedicated leaders from across the Commonwealth to strengthen local government. I look forward to advancing initiatives that empower our communities, promote innovation, and ensure that every resident benefits from effective, forward-thinking leadership.”

Bethany serves Newport News’ North District and is currently in his third year on the City Council. He is the youngest person to hold the position of Vice Mayor in Newport News history. He chairs the Financial and Governmental Performance Committee and acts as liaison to both the Charter Review Committee and the Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC) Board.

In addition to his role with VML, Bethany participates on committees within the National League of Cities (NLC), including Finance, Administration, and Intergovernmental Relations, where he works with municipal leaders nationwide on policy issues.

Bethany has a Master of Arts in Public Policy with a concentration in Public Administration from Liberty University. He is also a graduate of VPCC and Old Dominion University and holds a Business Analytics Certification from Cornell University.
